Myofascial Release

Myofascial Release explained

Myofascial release is a type of soft tissue technique that is used by our remedial massage therapists and physios. Instead of pushing on your muscles and working directly on your tight knots and bands, myofascial release is a lengthening, elongating and stretching technique applied directly to your soft tissues which include your muscles and fascia. Fascia is essentially a thin layer of connective tissue that connects parts of your body together.  When your fascia tension is released your body moves more freely and fluidly.

The technique of myofascial release is guided by how much soft tissue tension and limitation of range movement that you have.  It is a hands-on treatment technique that lengthens and unblocks your connective tissue resulting in a release of your fascia.

How you recognise you may benefit from myofascial release?

Most patients with chronic and recurring restrictions or tension will benefit from the release of their soft tissues including their fascia. You may also feel one side is always worse than the other side. Chronic stress, clenching teeth, poor posture, sleeping positions, adopted habits like always carrying things on one side or leaning on one leg more than the other when standing, shallow breathing or always ruminating on issues from the past, such as unresolved conflicts or wishing things were different than they can all contribute to tension in your muscles and fascia.

Irrespective of the reasons or contributing factors for your soft tissue restrictions the end result for you as a person can be ongoing aches and pains and poor movement patterns which can lead to biomechanical strains, wear and tear on joints or chronic pain.

City Physiotherapy & Sports Injury Clinic’s experienced therapists can help you feel better with a variety of treatment techniques, including myofascial release and stretching of your tight muscles and fascia in many areas of your body.
