Pregnancy Exercise Classes | Post Natal Therapeutic Exercise
During pregnancy and after giving birth, women may experience a number of complaints which can be assisted with physiotherapy treatment & therapeutic exercises.
Common issues during pregnancy can include low back pain, sciatica, carpal tunnel syndrome, sacroiliac joint pain, pelvic floor weakness and incontinence. These problems can be attributed to the change in posture due to the forward shift in your centre of gravity and associated weight gain and pregnancy-related hormones. Some of these complaints may continue after giving birth as well as the development of diastasis recti, separation of the superficial abdominal muscles.
Physiotherapy while pregnant may assist the above problems through mobilisation, soft tissue techniques, and stretching and strengthening exercises. Education regarding movement patterns and support braces may also be helpful.
Participation in gentle physical activity can also have positive benefits through pregnancy. Our Physiotherapists can teach you specific and safe pregnancy exercise that once learned can be performed under supervision in our exercise studio under supervision. The exercises are focused on activation your dynamic core stability muscles to provide stability to your pelvis and spine, low impact strength and flexibility exercises to help develop a strong core to aid you through your maternal journey. You will work with our physiotherapist 1:1 whilst they assess and then devise a specific exercise programme for you. Once you are safe performing your therapeutic exercises, you may progress into a class for supervision. Your physiotherapist will need to reassess you along the way to ensure your programme remains safe during your pregnancy and postnatal period.
