Winter Exercise: Tips to Prevent Pain and Injuries | City Physio Adelaide

Couple exercising in Winter

As the winter chill rolls in you may start to notice that your joints and muscles are starting to become more stiff and sore. This is normal, but we understand it can be frustrating especially if you are finally getting back into your exercise routine post-holidays.

The cold temperatures coupled with the anticipation of pain and injury, can easily make you want to ditch your sneakers and cosy up with a blanket until spring.

But that doesn’t have to be the case! At City Physio we have a few simple strategies to help you stay active, injury free, and keep your fitness routine consistent (striking the balance with a few cosy nights as well, of course!). Let’s explore how you can beat the cold and stay on track with your fitness routine this winter.

How The Cold Can Impact Your Body

The winter chill can impact your body more than you might realise…

Cold-Induced Muscle Stiffness

In cold conditions, the body’s primary goal is to conserve heat and maintain a stable core temperature. To achieve this, it constricts blood vessels near the skin’s surface, minimising heat loss through the skin (a primary pathway for heat dissipation) and redirecting blood flow towards the core.

As a result blood flow to the muscles and joints in the limbs is reduced, limiting the supply of oxygen and nutrients. This causes the muscles to stiffen and contract.

Stiff muscles are less flexible and more susceptible to injury. Cold weather may also tighten previously injured muscles or joints.

Reduced muscle strength and speed

Muscular contraction and nerve impulses rely on a series of complex chemical reactions, and these reactions occur more slowly in cooler conditions.

This slower reaction rate translates to reduced muscle strength and contractile speed, meaning muscles don’t generate as much force or move as quickly in the cold.

Inflammation

Cold weather can exacerbate inflammation, particularly joint pain, through several mechanisms.

In the chilly weather you may experience reduced blood flow to your joints. This can cause them to become stiffer and painful as they don’t get their ideal quota of oxygen and nutrients.

Additionally, synovial fluid (this is the fluid which lubricates your joints) may thicken in cold weather. This thickening reduces the fluid’s ability to flow freely within the joint. The joint tissues may rub against each other more, causing friction and reduced mobility

Increased Lactic Acid

Exercising in colder temperatures can lead to higher levels of lactic acid.

When your muscles don’t receive enough oxygen, they switch to anaerobic metabolism (lactic acid production) to generate energy. As your body redirects blood flow and oxygen to the core when it’s cold – your muscles may rely more on anaerobic metabolism.

A build up of lactic acid can contribute to muscle fatigue and a burning sensation during exercise which can hinder performance.

Man Staying Active During Winter

Why Staying Active During Winter Matters

Exercise should always be part of our daily routine – but if you’re looking for some winter-specific reasons to keep moving, we’ve got you covered! Here’s why staying active is even more important when the temperature drops.

Boosts Immunity

Exercise can play a huge role in strengthening your immune system. It increases the circulation of immunity cells in your blood, elevates your internal body temperature (which harmful bacteria hates!) and improves sleep quality.

These are all things a healthy immune system loves – especially during cold and flu season!

Protects joints

Regular exercise helps maintain joint health and reduces the risk of stiffness and pain, especially important during colder months when joints may become more susceptible to pain. Regular movement helps maintain joint flexibility and range of motion. It also stimulates the production of synovial fluid, which lubricates the joints and helps them move smoothly. Since we know our joints aren’t exactly thrilled by winter, this is a major win!

Combat the “Winter Blues”

Between the cold weather and reduced sunlight – it is normal to experience dips in mood and energy! Fortunately, exercise is a natural mood booster because it triggers the release of endorphins, neurotransmitters that promote feelings of happiness and well-being. This can also combat the fatigue and lethargy that can accompany the winter blues by increasing metabolism and boosting energy levels. What is not to love!

Tips to Prevent Pain and Injury

As much as we love to stay active during the winter months, it’s important to remember that, as we know, the colder weather can bring its own set of challenges.

With the risk of muscles becoming stiffer and joints becoming inflamed, we completely understand that winter exercise can sometimes feel like a battle. But don’t worry – we are here to help! With a few simple tips, you can prevent pain and injury, and keep moving safely throughout the season. Here’s how you can stay strong and injury-free this winter!

Warm Up

The colder weather can make muscles stiff, and stiff muscles are more prone to injury. Make sure to warm up properly before any physical activity, whether you’re going for a winter run, outdoor exercise class or doing a quick workout indoors.

A dynamic warm-up will help get your blood flowing and muscles primed for action (think arm circles, leg swings, or walking lunges).

Hydrate

It’s easy to forget to drink enough water in the winter, but staying hydrated is just as important in the cold months as it is in the summer.

Dehydration can cause muscle cramps, joint stiffness, and fatigue, all of which can lead to injury. So, even if you’re not sweating as much in the cool weather, make sure to keep sipping on water throughout the day.

If you’re feeling extra frosty, try warm water or herbal teas to stay hydrated without the chill.

Keep Moving Indoors

We understand that sometimes it is just too hard to fight the cold outdoors. Luckily, winter is the perfect time to try new activities like yoga or clinical Pilates.

It doesn’t matter if you’re in your living room, at the gym or here at City Physio – the key is to stay consistent with your movement.

Don’t forget that walking around the house is exercise too! To keep moving, pace around while you chat on the phone or catch up on your favourite podcast.
