The Lure of Playing Video Games and Your Health

With all this extra time on our hands these days, what are we going to do?? Disinfect the house?? Well probably, but for many of us, the lure of video games is strong. However, can sitting and playing video games all day be bad for our health? The simple answer is yes

Research shows that as little as 5 minutes of gaming can lead to poor posture – slouching into a rolled and rounded shoulder position with a forward head position to keep your eyes on the screen. This is the case for both PC based gaming and for gaming consoles, so don’t just think that because you sit on the couch playing Apex with your PlayStation controller in hand or playing Animal Crossing on your Nintendo Switch that this doesn’t affect you because it does.

When playing in a seated position on the couch, gaming chair, or dining chair, sitting up straight with good back support and feet flat on the ground is a very good starting point. For shorter gaming sessions, consider standing as another option to take the strain off of your spine. Taking regular breaks, getting up and going for a walk and stretching throughout a gaming session should also be encouraged to prevent damage to the body.

Good ergonomics whilst playing video games is vital to ensure that you don’t cause a long term injury to the body. Research shows that repetitive strain injuries, tenosynovitis, circulatory disorders and spinal injuries can all be a direct result of poor posture whilst gaming. Whilst manufactures do their best to design products that are the best ergonomic fit for gamers, ultimately body position is of the utmost importance. PC users should follow the same ergonomic rules for a working from home set up to optimise the ergonomic setup. Arm

For years and years, gamers have been characterised as lazier and sloppy, this notion has been widely debunked. However, poor posture while playing for hours at a time can certainly lead to a broad range of issues for the body and with some simple adjustments to how and where we play this can be minimised significantly.
