Pilates is a fun and effective way to add exercise to your life and it’s suitable for both men and women. At City Physiotherapy & Sports Injury Clinic in Adelaide, your Pilates Physiotherapist is not only experienced but will give you an individual and personalised approach to your Pilates and core exercise – No matter what your initial level of fitness is or injury history you start out with, At City Physio Pilates we will design a Pilates program especially tailored for your specific needs.

If you’re looking for Pilates in Adelaide with qualified Physiotherapists, then join the many patients that keep coming to us – they know they are in excellent hands. At your first Physio Pilates Assessment we take the time to understand your specific rehab, exercise and personal goals. We form a partnership with you to ensure that you can reach your goals safely.

In your first individual Pilates treatment we get you reacquainted with your core muscles, teach you the principles of Pilates and teach you how to correctly switch on your deep core muscles. You may think finding and switching on your core will be easy or hard. That’s ok. Your Adelaide Pilates Physiotherapist will introduce you to how to use your core muscles in functional everyday ways - this will be different for each person - it could be your posture at work, home, or improving your overall fitness, rehab from injury or improvement in your running, cycling or sporting activity. You might have back pain, neck pain, headache or knee pain, hip pain, groin pain or another injury. No matter what your goals are we help you to build your strength, flexibility, balance and muscle endurance. We also offer pregnancy, antenatal/postnatal, women’s health Pilates sessions and classes.

Various Pilates and core exercise classes are offered at City Physiotherapy & Sports Injury Clinic Adelaide. If you are interested in starting Clinical Pilates to restore your core stability and support your spine then our Physio Pilates sessions and Pilates classes can set you on the right path. Your Pilates Physio at City Physiotherapy Adelaide will work with you until they feel you are safe and ready to enter our Physiotherapist supervised Pilates classes or independent Pilates sessions.

New to Pilates? That’s ok. Our Pilates Physiotherapists will look after you and will guide you from your initial appointment all the way through into a class. If you prefer, you have the option of staying with a 1:1 Pilates Physio session if a class or doing individual Pilates sessions is not your preference.

Our Clinical Pilates classes use a combination of Pilates reformers, Pilates mat work, Pilates trapeze table, Wunda Chair, Gym/Swiss balls, Chi balls and Pilates magic circle. Our Pilates Posture Plus+ classes use the principles of Pilates mat work along with core, gluteal and postural muscle toning and whole body and yoga stretching. This class is great for posture correction, general fitness and for those wanting to negate the effects of sitting at an office desk or computer. The Back pain and core exercise class works on the principles of strengthening your core muscles through functional movement and exercises, gluteal engagement and squatting as well as spinal and hip flexibility. Our Pregnancy Pilates and women’s health Pilates class is designed especially with females in mind and offers the support women need though pregnancy, postnatal and the various stages of their lives.

Clinical Pilates - what is it?

Pilates is a method of exercise and movement re-education based on the interpretation of the work and teachings of Josef Pilates. The basis of Pilates is about control of your body, its position and its movement.

Clinical Pilates, which is a modification of this method, is used for therapeutic rehabilitation. We use specific spring loaded clinical Pilates equipment to help support and guide your movements during the clinical Pilates classes.

The main focus is to reactivate and strengthen your dormant deep abdominal – your core, trunk, neck and back muscles. The core muscles stabilise your spine. Having a strong core in Physio terms means that you have the foundation for good posture and controlled active movements. In the long term, the aim is to reduce your back pain or neck pain, improve your flexibility and quality of life.

Our Adelaide Pilates Physio may use the latest technology real time ultrasound imaging to assist with your learning. Once your Pilates Physio has worked with you and you have mastered the initial phase of the core Physio stability training of clinical Pilates you may then hire our Pilates studio equipment to use the clinical Pilates reformer, Pilates trapeze and other Pilates equipment within the gym to maintain your newfound muscles in top shape.

If you need to have your Pilates program upgraded or downgraded for varying reasons your Adelaide Pilates physiotherapist will work with you one on one to adjust your Pilates exercises so you are getting the best possible outcome for you.

When will I get results from Pilates?

Whilst switching on your core can have an immediate effect on pain, retraining your muscles properly may require more time. It could take several weeks of doing Pilates before you notice a difference.

Can I hurt myself whilst doing Clinical Pilates?

Clinical Pilates Physio exercises can be quite challenging and if performed incorrectly can cause strain on your body. In order to avoid injury and to help ease our patients into becoming familiar with the Pilates equipment and exercises patterns, one on one Physiotherapist guided Pilates training is required with our Pilates Physio to begin with. Once a safe level of competency is reached our patients are free to transfer to one of our popular City Physio Adelaide Pilates classes.

What can I expect from Pilates?

Before starting a Clinical Pilates group class, you will have an individual assessment session with our Pilates physiotherapist. The aim of this is to ascertain what your main goals are and to build a safe programme tailored to your individual requirements and your body specifically.

Is Pilates Claimable on my Health Insurance?

Yes all 1:1 clinical Pilates and clinical Pilates assessment sessions with our Adelaide Pilates physiotherapist are claimable under your private extra’s health insurance physiotherapy cover. Most health Insurer’s also cover our Clinical Pilates or Physio group classes under their extras cover under the code T560.

*see individual health funds for details.

How many 1:1 Pilates sessions will I need before I can do a Pilates class?

Your Pilates Physio will need a few sessions to assess your areas of strength or weakness, to teach you how to properly activate your core muscles and to design and teach you your specific Pilates programme. How long this takes is usually anywhere up to 4 individual Pilates sessions. It may take some people less time and some people more time and will always be at the discretion of the Physiotherapist. We need to make sure you are safe and ready to enter any class or work safely independently in our Adelaide Pilates studio.
